What Determines the Price of a Private Jet Charter?

There is no single fixed tariff for private jet charter. Two quotations for the same route can differ because the total price is based on more than the time spent in the air.

Aircraft category and positioning

The first major factor is the aircraft category. Light jets, midsize jets, super-midsize jets and long-range aircraft have different operating costs. A larger aircraft may provide more cabin space and greater range, but its hourly cost will also be higher.

The location of the aircraft is equally important. If no suitable jet is based in Istanbul on the requested date, an aircraft may need to fly in empty from another city. This positioning flight can be included in the charter price.

As a result, even on a short route from Istanbul to Bodrum, an aircraft already available in Istanbul may be priced very differently from one that must be positioned from elsewhere in Europe.

Landing, parking, terminal and handling fees vary considerably between airports.

Waiting time

If the aircraft remains at the destination, parking, crew accommodation and minimum daily utilisation may apply.

Hotel costs, transfers and allowances can be added when the crew stays overnight.

Permits and slots

Certain countries and airports require paid permits or allocated arrival and departure times.

Weather-related services

During winter, de-icing and other weather procedures may create additional charges.

Catering and special requests

Standard refreshments may be included, while specific menus or restaurant orders can cost extra.

Different taxes can apply according to the route, passenger status and regulatory framework.

Return flights and empty legs

On a return journey, keeping the aircraft at the destination is not always the most economical solution. In some cases, the aircraft may depart after dropping off the passengers, with a different jet arranged for the return. A broker can compare both structures.

An empty-leg flight may offer a lower price. However, its timing and route depend on the primary charter movement. Empty legs therefore require flexibility and should not always be treated as a dependable main plan.

Comparing quotations properly

When comparing quotations, the total amount is not the only consideration. The aircraft’s age, cabin condition, luggage capacity, cancellation terms, de-icing policy, transfers and included services should all be reviewed.

A low quotation may exclude essential items. A transparent quotation identifies the main charges and explains where additional costs could arise.
